The indicator function of a set $A \subset X$ is defined by
$$ \mathbb{1}\left. (x) \right. = \begin{cases} 1 & \mathrm{\text{if }}x \in A \\ 0 & \mathrm{\text{if }}x \notin A \end{cases} $$The indicator function of a set $A \subset X$ is defined by
